Welcome to the smell of decaying flesh as you scavenge through ruins and remains of the once living and infected to survive in the action role-playing game Dying Light. Jump from rooftops to poles and back to beams in order to escape the infected grips or stand it out and battle your way through the ever present crowd while enabling earned skills to bust zombie’s skulls. Determine your main alliance through this post-apocalyptic thriller, as you have both the dead and the living tracking you down throughout the city. Beware when the dark night overtakes the sky, as you will need to sneak through the infected streets to stay alive or be killed by terrifying genetically mutated infected.
By no means is this game an original. It’s a compilation of Mirror’s Edge, Dead Island, and Dead Rising. The world of Harran can be an enjoyable adventure especially during the cooperative play portion, which allows both players to save their progress as long as the sequential progress is the same. The controls can be quite tricky at times as there is little to no control indications for certain aspects. The parkour does work pretty seamlessly through first person, but there are some noticeable issues when you are in cooperative play while watching the other character parkour. I did have a few issues with some bugs, like being stuck in a van and falling through the map having to kill myself to get out of the bug, but overall runs pretty smoothly with a 1080p/30fps resolution.
Now, here are the spoilers:
The story of Dying Light is just what you would expect from a post-apocalyptic game with the non-infected trying to control and weaponize the viral strain that caused the epidemic and selling it to the highest bidder. You begin your journey as Kyle Crane, a GRE Agent that seemed to want the cure for the virus to help end the spread. In his journey he is saved by Jade, an affiliate with the Runners that take refuge in a tower in the middle of Harran. While gaining the Runner’s research for the cure, Crane must make a deal with Rais for Antizen, a symptom suppressant for infected bites. As you progress through the game the real allegiances of the different groups are revealed as you go into a huge boss fight for the ending.
