If there happens to be a Borderlands 3, designing veteran for Gearbox, Paul Hellquist, will not be a part of its development. Hellquist has left Gearbox to join an independent developer Robot Entertainment, as it’s lead game designer. Robot CEO Patrick Hudson announced hiring Hellquist yesterday on their website.

"I spent a considerable amount of time with Paul recently, and I was consistently impressed with his breadth of thinking, passion for great design, and humility,” Hudson said. “His remarkable portfolio of work is clearly well-earned. Paul is a great fit for Robot, and I expect him to have a profound impact on the games we make, starting with Orcs Must Die! Unchained.”
Both of these companies are based in Texas, so Hellquist did not need to necessarily move for the new job.
Hellquist did work at Gearbox for more than seven years, most recently working as the creative director on Borderlands 2. Prior to its release he led the design team for BioShock in 2007.
